My Top Five Movies

We all love film

Collecting, curating, consuming. We rate and review, growing our libraries as we grow ourselves.

There’s no more powerful media than film. It can drive us to tears or hysterics. It can even change lives.

In no particular order, here’s a few of my favourites.

Rob Gordon

High Fidelity

Directed by Stephen Frears, 2000

Every man is Rob Gordon. The quintissential underachiever, fucking up every aspect of his life. This film is the ultimate guide to being a man.

We deliver, or we drown

K-19: The Widowmaker

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, 2002

Admittedly not a particularly accurate depiction of cold-war submarine warfare, but these films never are. Just look at the awful U-571.

Terrifying radiation scenes, lots of vodka.

Favourite film quote

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
— Clark Gable, Gone with the Wind
Jurassic Park

Apollo 13

Directed by Ron Howard, 1995

Space is fucking cool. Apollo 13 is the best film about space.

The last half of the film is spent in devestating tension; I never fail to feel a lump in my throat as the lunar orbiter hurtles towards earth.

Truly epic.

Top Gun

Directed by Tony Scott, 1988

Danger Zone.
